Summer Stuff to do


The Library seems quiet in the summer, when the warm weather encourages everyone to outdoor pursuits. But there's still plenty going on! So come into the cool, quiet library and enjoy all that YOUR library has to offer!

work on a puzzle with like-minded puzzlers
sign-up to get a start on computers with our free class on Wednesdays @ 1pm (sign-up in the library prior to attending)

What's happening @ the library in May?

Free computer instruction is available @ the library. COMPUTER CLASSES for beginning-level computer users are offered Wednesdays at 1pm. Sign-ups available at the library (no sign-ups by phone). The GENEALOGY CLASS meets every Tuesday at 2pm. Genealogy guidance & help using Ancestry.com and HeritageQuest.com are provided. No sign-up is necessary. Please call library prior to attending to confirm class time.

Tumbleweed Tales Poetry group will meet Saturday, May 7, @ 10am. All ages welcome, bring original poetry or old favorites to share.

Get your tickets for the great Mother’s Day Raffle; drawing will be held May 6; need not be present to win. Beginning May 16, watch for tickets for the Father’s Day Raffle. Tickets available at the library.

Shakespeare Roundtable meets to read, discuss, & enjoy Shakespeare every Tuesday, 4-5:30pm. All are invited to attend. For more info, email ezshakespeare@yahoo.com.

For all who like to knit and/or crochet, the KNIT WITS meet every Wednesday, 1pm @ the library. Bring your current project and come join others who love yarn crafting. Free fun for all ages.

Family Craft Day will be held on May 14 @ 10am. Join Miss Brenda to make a cute Butterfly Bookmarker. Free fun for the whole family.

TCG (Trading Card Game) DUEL, for kids 11+, is held on Saturdays, 12-4:30. Meet others who love games such as Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, and Yu-Gi-Oh.

Teen Night will be held every 3rd Friday, sponsored by the Library, in cooperation with the Nye Communities Coalition and St. Martin's Episcopal Church. Come on Friday, May 20, 5:30-8:00pm, for free karaoke, Wii, Food, & Fun. For more information, please call 727-9970 or 537-1115. Open to middle-school through high-school age students.

The Pahrump Anime Club will hold its regular meeting at the library Saturday, May 21, 1-4pm. Absolutely no unaccompanied children under the age of 10.

The Favorite Authors Book Club will meet Tuesday, May 17, at 1:30pm. This month’s author is Carolyn Hart. Read anything by this author then come enjoy a lively discussion. New members always welcome, so bring a friend. For more information, call the library.

Summer Reading Club will be held June 14th through July 19th. Sign-ups are now available. The theme is “One World, Many Stories” and T-shirt orders can be placed now. The Kick-Off Activity, for all ages, will be held Tuesday, June 14, as we welcome storyteller Jim Cogan. Regular sessions will commence on Tuesday, June 21, and continue as follows: ages 4-5 on Wednesdays, 10:00-11:00am; ages 6-11 on Tuesdays, 1:00-2:15pm OR Wednesdays, 11:15am-12:30pm; ages 5th grade & up on Tuesdays, 2:30-3:30pm. All library events are alcohol-, tobacco-, and drug-free.

December @ the Library

BEYOND BASICS, for advanced beginners, will be offered Mondays, Oct. 11-Dec. 20 @ 1pm. This free, one-time class is for those already comfortable with mouse and keyboard, and who would like to find out what more they can do with their computer. The theme is “Go Bananas for Books!” Sessions will be held: ages 2-3 on Wednesdays, 10:15-10:45am (parent or guardian must accompany child); ages 4-5 on Wednesdays, 11:00-11:45am; and ages 6-12 on Wednesdays, 3:30-4:30pm. This month’s Free Movie Day will not be held due to the holiday. Watch for more info next month.

Be sure to get your Sponsor Decoration and help decorate our Christmas tree. Only $1 each and all proceeds to benefit Kids’ Programming & Kids’ Books. Ask at the Main Circulation Desk.

Christmas Raffle tickets are available, $1 each or 6 for $5. The prize includes a Christmas afghan, tree skirt, and tablecloth handmade by our own Knit Wits, plus other goodies. Drawing will be held on Dec. 20; need not be present to win.

The Library will welcome local author Toni Nelson, who will be signing her book “A Beggars Purse.” This is a recounting of her “journey to help the people who have nothing.” September 11, 11:00am-1:00pm.

On September 22, 10am-2pm, author Barbara U. Cherish will be in the library to sign her book “The Auschwitz Kommandant: A Daughter’s Search for the Father She Knew.”

This month’s Free Movie Day will be Saturday, September 25, 2pm. The feature title will be “Nico the Unicorn” (rated NR). Free family fun.

Remember that many new and gently-used books are always on sale at the library—paperbacks 10¢ & up, hardbacks 50¢ & up. Videos, puzzles, audiobooks, childrens’ books, and book bundles are all available. This month’s special: Chicken Soup for the Soul books. As always, proceeds from all sales benefit the library.

It’s time again for the WINTER READING PROGRAM! This year’s theme is “Catch a Good Book!” and it will start on Wednesday, February 3, and run through Wednesday, April 7. Classes are: Ages 2-3 on Wednesdays @9:15-9:45am (parent of guardian must accompany child); Ages 4-5 on Wednesdays @ 10-10:45am; Ages 6-12 on Wednesdays @ 3:30-4:30pm; and Teens on Thursdays @ 3-4pm (no session on 11/26). Free Fall fun @ the library! Teen Zone also continues, meeting on January 9 & 16 @ 2pm.
